The file

The Galleria is Prada's structured flagship and its most literal act of remembering: the name is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the Milan arcade where Mario Prada opened the first shop in 1913, and the leather is saffiano, the cross-hatched, wax-finished calfskin treatment associated with the house since that era. Introduced in 2007, the bag is a trapeze tote with double handles, twin zips over an open center compartment, and the structure to stand on its own feet, which made it the default serious-work bag of the 2010s and a fixture ever since.

Saffiano is the point and the problem. The cross-hatch pattern is pressed into treated leather, which makes it durable, rain-resistant, and easier to counterfeit convincingly than natural-grain hides. On a bag with no date code, in continuous production for nearly two decades, condition and construction quality carry the entire authentication burden.

FROM THE FILE

The house's structured workhorse: unglamorous to authenticate precisely because it is so consistent. The cross-hatch must be even and sharp, the structure must stand square, and the interior plaque engraving is where superfakes still stumble. At real money, route through platform authentication.

Before you bid: the checklist

  • Cross-hatch under raking light. Genuine saffiano's pattern is uniform and finely pressed; fakes drift in scale and depth, especially across seams and corners.
  • It should stand at attention. A Galleria that slumps or whose base panel bows has either lost its structure or never had it. Structure is part of the specification.
  • Corners and wear tell the truth. Saffiano wears at the corners by design; even honest wear beats suspicious perfection on a bag this common in the counterfeit trade.

CODE ≠ AUTHENTIC
READ BEFORE BIDDING

Prada encodes no dates. The white interior number tags identify style and factory, the plaques identify the house, and nothing on a Prada bag encodes when it was made - so this maison gets no dating tool, and any guide selling a Prada date decoder is decoding something that does not exist. The doctrine here is materials and construction: pocone and Re-Nylon have a dense matte hand no fake fabric matches, saffiano's cross-hatch must be uniform under raking light, spazzolato shows directional brushing, and plaque engraving quality still separates the superfakes. Recent models should keep their authenticity cards, and for any serious purchase, route through a platform authentication program: eBay physically inspects qualifying handbags.
