The file

In 1932 a champagne house asked Gaston-Louis Vuitton for a bag that could carry five bottles without breaking them, and the answer was the Noé: four bottles upright, one inverted in the middle, a drawstring to close it, and a name borrowed from Noah, who planted a vineyard after the flood. It was the first luxury bucket bag, a shape the entire industry has since made ordinary.

The Noé's collecting appeal is its honesty: a shape unchanged for nearly a century, sizes added over the decades, and a construction simple enough that condition tells the whole story. Drawstring wear, corner scuffs and interior cleanliness decide value more than rarity does.

FROM THE FILE

The best origin story in the catalog attached to one of its most usable vintage bags. Condition is the market here: the shape never changed, so the decision is between decades of patina, and the drawstring and corners are where the years show first.

Before you bid: the checklist

  • Drawstring and corners first. The wear points that decide a Noé's grade. Replaced drawstrings are common and should be disclosed.
  • Interior honesty. Bucket bags live hard lives inside. Sticky or peeling linings are a known age issue; price them in.

Authentication doctrine

CODE ≠ AUTHENTIC
READ BEFORE BIDDING

Louis Vuitton runs neck and neck with Chanel for most-counterfeited maison, and the fakes span every era and quality level, date codes included. The doctrine: a date code is not authentication. Decode it, then demand agreement everywhere else - the factory letters must match the made-in stamp, the code's era must match the canvas, lining and hardware, vachetta patina must look lived rather than manufactured, and the heat stamp's typography is the counterfeiters' most common stumble. For any serious purchase, route through a platform authentication program.
