The file

In 2024 Balenciaga did what Dior did with the Saddle and Prada with the Re-Edition: it reissued its own archive by name. Le City keeps the original's 25-panel construction and corner hardware while standing straighter, in cleaner calfskin, more polished and less punk, and the campaign put the first one back in Kate Moss's hands, closing a loop that opened at the Fall 2001 show. The revival also did what revivals do to the record: it lifted original Cities on the resale market and blurred the two generations in listings overnight.

Separating them is mercifully mechanical. The revival's tags belong to the modern letter era with the letter stamped front and back, its leather is smoother and its edges cleaner than any original, and original Cities date themselves through the decoder. The two generations are different objects at different money, and the words in a listing settle nothing.

FROM THE FILE

A revival file with the site's favorite trap: generation confusion, in both directions. The tag era, the leather hand, and the structure separate a 2024 Le City from a 2005 City in seconds, and the price should follow the generation, not the title.

Before you bid: the checklist

  • Generation first. Structured build, cleaner leather, and modern-era tags mean the 2024 revival; slouch, distress, and the older letter eras mean an original. Decide which is being sold before anything else.
  • The letter agrees or it does not. A claimed original whose letter decodes to the 2020s, or a claimed Le City with a 2000s-era tag, is answered by its own tag.
  • Polish is period-correct. The revival is meant to look refined; an original is meant to look lived-in. Each one wearing the other's finish is the warning.

Authentication doctrine

CODE ≠ AUTHENTIC
READ BEFORE BIDDING

Balenciaga dating runs on the season letter: from Fall/Winter 2003 the tag carries a letter that maps to a half-year, running backwards through the alphabet, and because the alphabet has cycled, most letters now mean two possible seasons, split by tag features - metal plate or leather-only, the letter repeated on the tag back from Fall 2012, the color-code line from 2010, the large MADE IN ITALY from 2011. Production before Fall 2003 carries no letter at all, so a letterless tag on an early bag is correct, not suspicious. The style number must match front and back of the tag, the leather is thin and matte where fakes run thick and shiny, and the hardware families have birthdays of their own. The season letter decoder on this site handles the whole system, cycle ambiguity included.
